Frugal Smoking 101

Wepush Clouds  |  at  19:41:00  |  ,  |

this guide is intended for newbs. These tips may all seem obvious to you, but they won't be to everyone. I'm just trying to spread the knowledge. Anyways, the purpose of this post is to share some of my favorite methods for staying high on a budget. Being both a veteran smoker and an extremely poor student, it's necessary for me to not waste a bit of my hard-earned cash, so I strive to be the most economical Ent I can be.
  1. Buy good weed. It might seem counterintuitive, but if you have good weed you don't need to smoke as much and end up saving money. I'm not saying to buy the most expensive bud you can find, but no shwag/shake/brown ditchweed. Get something with visible trichomes (small growths that look like crystals and are rich in THC) or orange/purple "hairs" if at all possible. In general, dense well-trimmed nugs are preferable, though there is also good weed out there that is not well manicured. Obviously your selection will depend on the number and quality of your connections, but try to get the best you can without getting ripped off. Save the mediocre, cheap stuff for parties and other gatherings; this is intended to be your personal stash. Though it will be a bit more pricey, your money will be well spent. I, like many people, have often gone through phases of “not being able to get high,” but if you have good enough ganja even just a few bowls will always do the trick.
  2. Buy in bulk. This tip largely depends on two important factors: Your budget and your self-control. If you simply have no money at all than you'll just have to get what you can. However, if you have a little bit of extra money that you need to spend wisely, it could actually be a good investment to get more weed than you normally do. Greater quantity = Greater value (from any honest dealer at least), and if you intend to keep smoking you will eventually use it all (weed can stay good for a very long time if stored properly). The catch here is that you need to trust yourself not to go overboard and use it all up faster than normal. If you have a routine, stick to it. If necessary, limit yourself to a particular amount per day, such as a gram. Don't start smoking twice as much as normal or share it with everyone you know. You know yourself best, so start off small and don't withdraw your life savings. But if you normally buy a gram or a half-eighth, try buying an eighth or a quarter. If you normally buy those, try buying a ½ or full ounce. If you normally buy those, try a quarter pound, etc, etc. If you can resist the temptation to quickly squander it away you will end up saving money in the long run.
  3. Smoke wisely. This is related to the previous tip. Think ahead about how much you would like to smoke as well as how much you can actually afford to smoke. Be aware of how much weed you can smoke per week, and think about when you would enjoy it most. Do you want to save the majority of it for your days off, or do you need some in the morning to get through your work day? Obviously this varies from person to person, but the point is that you should think about smoking as what it truly is; an extremely enjoyable and relaxing habit that costs money. Save it for the times you want it most.
  4. Corner hit. This is a smoking technique that involves not burning all of the weed at once. When you light your lighter or match, just put it near or slightly over an edge of the bowl until it is lit, then take it away. By doing this you can get a nice cherry going that allows you to get nice hits but at the same time doesn't burn the whole bowl and waste it all at once. Which brings us to our next point...
  5. Don't waste smoke. This isn't always the easiest to avoid completely, but it is something you should be aware of. Any smoke that doesn't make it into your lungs is wasted weed! What blasphemy! If you stop hitting your piece and it continues to smoke you should put it out by gently covering the bowl with the lighter or your finger, or continue to hit it until it goes out. It takes time and practice, but if you make an effort you can make sure that almost none of your sweet Mary Jane is wasted.
  6. Hold your smoke in. This will probably be the most controversial tip. I've read and been told that the vast majority of THC is absorbed within the first few seconds, but never from a very reliable source (though it does sound reasonable to me). I'll be the first to admit that holding your smoke in for a long time is definitely more unhealthy, but one thing is certain; it sure as hell gets you a lot higher. You can counterbalance some of the unhealthiness by smoking from a bong, bubbler, or vaporizer (if you know somebody with one), which are healthier alternatives to pipes and joints. I find that they also get me higher, meaning I smoke less of my weed.
TL;DR: Buy good weed in bulk, have some self-control and smoke it when you want it most, use the corner hit method and and hold in your smoke.
Using these methods I'm able to stay high as much as I want for only a few dollars a day. What are some of your guys' favorite frugal smoker tips?
